A beautiful young woman appears out of nowhere, naked, and suffering from amnesia. She wanders into into the grounds of a carnival where the women of the carnival quickly take her in to offer here some protection from the men of (and the men who visit) the carnival. The girl, who will go by the name of Julie, although she's not sure what her name was (or how she wound up naked and outside) finds comfort in the carnival. But the carny manager, Garth, can't afford to take on someone for no reason, although he finds himself very attracted to Julie. But the carny is full of rough, lustful men, an done, Big Mike, a crew foreman, has his eye on the sexy girl. He promises to find a way to use Julie ... and not just in the circus operations.
This is classic, vintage erotica. 'John Dexter' was a house name for a variety of authors (including noted names such as Robert Silverberg) but it is not known who actually wrote this book, which is too bad, because this is actually a well-written story. The emphasis here is on the character of Julie and her relationships within the carnival.
And of course there's sex.
Julie discovers (remember, she's lost her memory) that she really enjoys sex. Even the rough man-handling from Big Mike, is enjoyable (although she doesn't like the man himself and she doesn't let him know she enjoys his roughness). But to keep her around, Big Mike put her on display - taking her clothes off for men to ogle her.
Garth and Big Mike will challenge each other for Julie's affection (and body) and if you can't figure out how it will turn out then you don't read enough. ("Julie’s body became Garth’s private sanctuary and he used it with tender, loving care, never hurting, always gentle to a fault.")
I continue to be surprised by vintage erotica and the quality of the actual story. The sex here was minimal, but still a driving force for the character of Julie and motivation for the antagonist.
